V beautiful
“We delight in the beauty of a butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty”_ Maya Angelou. It’s true. Beauty has been reduced to a sadly vague connotation (“In this world, when a girl’s called ‘beautiful’ sometimes my reaction to this is: in what terms? In fashion terms? Beauty pageant terms? Real people terms? I wish I could just say ‘she’s beautiful’, and leave it at that,” V Magazine creative director Stephen Gan). This picture helped remind me of a broader impression of both beauty and worth by revealing a degree of boldness, assertiveness, confidence…. Necessary to grab hold of the kind of self-esteem media implicitly tries to hide from women. That beauty really is in the eye of the beholder (I know corny). One has to catch it. Feel, be it. Esteem established on self-love and virtue costs less than a dime, with worth beyond human comprehension.

Epic cake face compliments vintage
Or does it? You tell me. Here’s the story. It’s a few days before my birthday party and I’m without an outfit or time to find one. I remember my mother returning from a funeral earlier that week with a vintage number worthy of praise. The top took the literal shape of a butterfly with embroidery and sheer crotchet to hosting the contrast communicated by its black and white; sequence and cotton; classic elegance and a risky appeal evident to a younger generation (me). The ankle length bottom (skirt) was a necessary plain black.
The outfit was initially bought in 1990 for my grandmother’s funeral, so convincing my mother to borrow it (after trying to get her to hand it down the way she’d other vintage items) was a mission. A brawl of ambiguous emotions begged conclusion, and the only way my mother could get me to shut up was to give in. “for the only time in your life…” she said. “What?” “You know how much it means to me, I respect it like nothing else.”
And so I wore the top with jean hot shorts and wedges to the party. I let my face compliment the outfit with a unicorn feel top knot hair do, lavish lash and a dark plump lip prior to the cake crowning. Fun it was. On my friend Vanessa’s birthday. This is for you, I love you.

NYFW report
SS12 lowers waists creating a more fluid silhouette synonymous with ease. Narciso Rodriguez displayed such, incorporating soft and airy colours with a referential yet unique take on hems. Loose fitting trousers were not short of a dream in Theyskens Theory’s show. Reinforcing the concept of comfort and effortless glam… while Alexander Wang explores the enthusiasm of prints and brights, enthralling an optimistic approach to the season. Rodarte incorporates shapes and embellishments that cease the limit of specified decade yet assume a sort of nostalgic appeal. Sophie Theallet draws inspiration from actress Romy Schneider and sexual tension to create backless numbers. And the first row hosts a chuckle of admiring celebs.
The cohesion of a growing conviction in the ambiguous marriage of colours seems to have blossomed from the past seasons. Colour blocking remains relevant. As well as more romantic materials, yet in absolutely unique ways. How I wish I were there. But one day , yeah.
